CreateSpace is going grind, crunch, whirr over the uploaded cover and interior. I should be able to order a proof copy on Thursday, receive it next week, and press the big ol' button that says "PUBLISH." The Wedding Fatality is coming soon to an Amazon browser near you!
For those of you who go the self-publishing route, I learned something on The Wedding Fatality that I wish I'd known on my first novel. You can include all sorts of graphics in the interior if you make a 6" by 9" pdf of the manuscript.
If you upload a Word document, CreateSpace changes any 'unusual' fonts into Times New Roman. I wanted to use some Webdings doodles to surround the chapter numbers, but CreateSpace removed them from my Word upload. It completely removed the .jpg of my publisher logo.
But by making a pdf and uploading that, the publisher logo is intact. I even included QR codes for my page at Amazon and for this blog.
I cannot afford a post-XP version of Adobe Acrobat, so I don't know how that works. But using the Ferengi workaround, CutePDF Pro, I am able to select CutePDF as my printer; then select printer properties and set it to PS Custom; and finally, tell it to make a 6x9 page size. It works!
After that, I upload the pdf file to CreateSpace. Amazon tells you if the graphics are too small (less than 300 dpi; it was a search to find a free website to make a QR code with that much resolution).
Maybe next time I'll try to upload my own cover. Still, I'm happy with CreateSpace's templates. I like that all three book covers (so far) are based on the same template; it makes them look like a matched set.
The careful editor Sue is the only person who has read the entire manuscript. I don't think murder mysteries are her genre of choice, but she said many kind things about the story. What I tell everyone is, if you don't like the book, tell me how great the type font is. That's just my little code.
I'll wait until spring to get The Rothschild Jewels ready for print. I've mentioned that I rushed The Wedding Fatality because of the Supreme Court's Obergefell decision. I hope the prologue sets up a willing suspension of disbelief.
The back cover blurb for The Wedding Fatality will be up soon at this website. As soon as CreateSpace gives me the OK I will add links to purchase from here.
I can't imagine what a *REAL* writer feels when their work is about to publish (as opposed to a glorified amateur like me). But speaking for A. Trauring, I am excited, excited, excited!
